Sasha Pivovarova led out a parade of extravagance at Chanel Pre Fall 09. Karl’s Byzantine ladies laughed in the face of the world-wide economic melt down to create one of the best, most inspired Chanel collections of the past few years.
Silhouettes varied from sloping, almost rounded shoulders to sleek, strong military coats and shapes. But it was the intricate details like crystal embellished feather fringe, hand-sewn pearls and beads embroidered into the brocade, and extravagant furs. My favorite part of the show was the high, gilded hair pieces and tiaras created by Japan’s Kamo. Inspired by Slavic folklore and Imperial Russia Karl has created a fantasy of layering and beauty. But considering the state of the world was it really appropriate? Sure. As Karl told WWD following the show, “These dresses come out in six or seven months from now, and the world may have changed by then. (Besides) There are very simple jersey dresses, too, but the way it’s shown it’s not a bore.”
As if Chanel could ever bore us!
Some of my favorite looks…
