On Thursday I was lucky enough to attend the Boston press preview of Karl Lagerfeld for Macy’s Impulse. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved the collection!
This isn’t the first time Karl has collaborated with a mass retailer; back in 2004 he did a collection with H&M. Hopefully, this time around he won’t offend too many people.
The collection has something for every style- from dresses for work to super soft tees for casual days to faux leather pieces that look and feel like the real deal Karl has crafted an affordable, contemporary collection!
This black, button adorned dress ($124) is sheer enough to be sexy but still work appropriate. It also has a white collar very reminiscent of Karl’s own day wear that can be worn buttoned or open depending on your mood.
If you’d rather wear Karl than dress like him you can grab one of four graphic tees with Karl’s iconic image. ($49-$59)
One of my favorite pieces is a black, leather-like vest ($89) which is strange as vests are usually my most hated clothing item. But this one, with its snake embossed front, and hood is so versatile for fall that I just fell in love!
It hits the waist at the perfect spot- long enough to move around comfortably but short enough to fit into the current “shrunken” look. The vest is another piece that works great over a casual top like above but can also be worn over pretty much anything- even a sweet dress that needs a little edge!
I tend to feel like a lot of capsule collections forget the importance of little details but there are lots of tiny finishes in the Karl Lagerfeld for Macy’s collection.
For example:
The high, studded neckline and pocket detailing elevates the dress from a simple sheath dress to something special. ($129)
For those of you looking for something beyond black and white the normally monochromatic Lagerfeld added some surprising pops of pink to the collection as well.
This soft blush dress ($99) has a great shape (very Coco) and will be great on a warm fall day or with black tights come winter!

If you want a stronger color this hot pink party dress will probably fit the bill. The shade can also be found on tanks, tops and blouses as well. I’m not crazy about this piece- its a little too sweet even in the bright shade but with the right styling it could work for a family wedding.

One piece I DO love is this gorgeous scarf ($49).
The pattern is some of Karl’s fashion sketches in pinks, blues, and greens. It’s huge (it could be worn as a sarong at the beach) and incredibly soft thanks to its wool blend.
Moving more towards winter wear there is this amazing gray jacket and cute tweed pieces that can go from office to evening with just a change of shoes!
(Jacket $169, Dress $129, Tank $69, Skirt $79)
All in all I think that this is an incredibly strong capsule collection and one of the best collaborations in the past few years thanks in part to the excellent quality of fabrics and materials.
I’m so excited to start shopping the line- it will be available on Macys.Com and in select Macy’s stores across the country beginning August 31st!
Thanks to Macy’s (and Marissa!) for having me and for providing the look book images!

  1. I like these looks, Especially the ladylike tweedy pieces. I'm so glad to see a review – I was wondering how they are in real life as opposed to press photos.

  2. These are nice pieces actually and these designs are very surprising!Absolutely I will have that gray/black tee and make a way to incorporate those trousers and shorts into my wardrobe.
